Powder for 45 70

Cast bullets and the 45-70 just go together. An alloy of 20:1 lead/tin is perfect for a hard hitting hammer load. A 405 grain flat nosed bullet of this alloy pushed by 52.1 grains of 3031 is a hammer! This load is not recommended for the Handi, it is a low level load for the Ruger #1..

I get the same results as 405, but I find that if I seat the boolit into the rifling it helps with the start pressure leaving less residue. This is with my 1885 Browning's. I recall that AA #5744 has .45-70 as one of the best calibers for this powder, why it was created.

Around 44 gr. of IMR-4198 should get him in the ballpark for that velocity.
